The Status of Today's MMO'sBy: RowellTuesday Jan 26, 2010 - 09:45 AM (-08:00)Have you noticed a staleness currently prevalent in the MMO's out on the market (or at least the MMO's that I've tried in the past month or so)?.  When I say staleness, I mean the rut that the MMO developers seem to have fallen in.  Sure, a gaming company can create MMO's with different genres, or with different backstory.  But in the end, the game is simply a race through content to gain levels in your character's class, gain more and more powerful equipment in order to perform more quests/missions that fall into on of a handful of styles (kill X number of creatures, collect X number of items, escort X npc to Y location, deliver this X to Y person/location,  use X item at Y location, find X item that Y creature stole, etc).  And in the end, once you get to the level cap, you're into end game raiding against very powerful bosses with more and more complex mechanics.

Now, here's my question...If you were to design an MMO, or pick up an MMO from a store that really impressed you and sucked you right in, what would that game contain?  What original ideas can you come up with that do not currently exist in current MMO's?  In essence, what do you think would really wow you (and others) enough so you would drop what you're doing and play?

A simple enough question.  The answers, however, will be more difficult to come up with.  I invite you to share your thoughts and ideas in the Game Discussion Forum.  Anyone can read this forum, only web site members can post.  You can join the web site by visiting the New User Page.

Happy HolidaysBy: RowellThursday Dec 17, 2009 - 08:00 PM (-08:00)Writing a quick post to wish all of you a happy holiday season, and a joyous and prosperous new year.

I've also posted a new photo album containing candid pictures of the crazy ferrets and kittehs.  You can find them at The Pet Photo Album Page.   Please feel free to visit and check out great quantities of cuteness.

Art and 3D RenderingsBy: RowellSaturday Nov 21, 2009 - 03:02 PM (-08:00)Good evening all.   I've added a page to showcase some of my recent artistic creations.  The page has been filed under the "Projects" tab in the navigation menu above.  You can also access the page directly by visiting the Art & 3D Renderings Page.   I will be adding more artwork here once they've been completed.
Getting Back on TrackBy: RowellFriday Oct 16, 2009 - 06:08 AM (-07:00)

After many months of pretty much being creatively dead game design wise, I've finally felt the return of the creative spark and actually got a game concept I'm going to pursue.  Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting this to be some big thing, it's just a step back onto the road I haven't been on for about a year.

The idea is basically a miniatures strategy/resource collection game, with a Trading Card element to it.  Think of it as Pirates of the Spanish Main meets Magic: The Gathering.  The play system is still in its rough phase right now.  Trying to get the order of things can be tricky.  One misplaced phase, and the game becomes trivial (or worse, a game that no one can win), while on the other hand, a misplaced phase can give one player an advantage over other players, simply because he/she goes first.  Balance....it`s a good thing.

I am opening a forum up so that registered users can partake in the game design, and offer their insights and ideas, as well as try to poke holes into the rules.  Feel free to register, and then visit the Game Design Forums.

On a side note, I've posted photos under "Historic Home".  If you want to see a 300 year old house, or remodelling/refurbishing of one, stop by there.

Thanks!

Engliton.Org gets a Revamp

Fri Jul 31, 2009
Welcome to the new and expanded Engliton.org. I`ve been wanting to update the web site for quite some time now, get away from the (very bad) asp.net 1.1 code and get the site running on a more robust, stable, secure and modern system. So, I pieced together tidbits of code that I`ve been squirreling away in my code vault, and come up with this web application. Needless to say, I`m happy with the way it works.

Since this is pretty much a new web site, all the old web user accounts have been deleted (but not the web forum accounts, those still exist). If you want to take part in discussions on the various topics of the site, you`ll need to create a new web account here.

Welcome!
